Patras

Patras is a major city and western gateway to the Peloponnese. Its museums, upper town and waterfront support a stay of their own before the journey continues to Olympia, Kalavryta or the Gulf of Corinth.

What makes it stand out

Choose one principal visit, such as the archaeological museum or castle, then connect it with a walk through the city. The Roman monuments and upper-town streets give a different perspective from the working port below. The carnival is an important part of Patras’s identity, but an event visit must use the dates and programme for the actual year.

Arrivals from western mainland Greece can use the Rio–Antirrio approach, while a port arrival requires the route and vehicle arrangements of the booked service. Both make Patras a logical first base rather than a place to cross immediately.

Planning your visit

One or two nights work for a city introduction. Check parking, port gates and the distance between your accommodation and selected sights. Museum and monument openings are separate. Keep a Strofylia nature day distinct from a full city programme. For the mountains, change to a Kalavryta base so that the climb and return do not dominate every day.
