Confirm collection and return locations, opening hours, deposits, insurance excess, mileage and any additional driver costs. Check the provider’s licence and age requirements directly. A low headline rate is only useful when the contract suits the trip.
Ask about the route
Tell the provider if you intend to use a ferry and obtain the required permission. Check restrictions on unpaved roads. Do not choose a rough track merely because navigation software suggests it; use an appropriate signed road and verify the approach to rural accommodation.
Allow time at each end
Leave room for the handover, vehicle inspection, refuelling and return before a flight or ferry. For one-way routes, confirm the return arrangement before booking the rest of the journey.
