What makes it stand out
The railway’s bridges, tunnels and steep setting make the engineering part of the landscape story. Chelmos–Vouraikos is recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark, a different designation from World Heritage. A visit to the wider area remains worthwhile by road when rail travel is unavailable; Kalavryta and the Cave of the Lakes provide separate destinations.
Planning your visit
Status checked 12 October 2026: Hellenic Train’s important-updates page still carries the suspension of the Diakopto–Kalavryta–Diakopto services until the infrastructure manager lifts it. Recheck the operator before booking; this is a dated notice, not a permanent description. Do not enter railway tracks, bridges or tunnels as a walking alternative. Any gorge walk needs an independently permitted route and current local advice.
