Tiryns

Near Nafplio, Tiryns presents Mycenaean fortification on a lower hill than Mycenae. Its heavy masonry and tightly organised entrances make it a rewarding visit in its own right.

What makes it stand out

Look at the thickness of the walls and how the builders channelled movement into the citadel. Galleries and internal spaces form part of the archaeological story, although the accessible visitor circuit may not include every feature. The term Cyclopean describes the scale of the masonry and its association with the mythical Cyclopes; it is not an account of how the walls were built. Tiryns and Mycenae share a single World Heritage inscription.

Planning your visit

Allow a focused visit rather than a roadside photograph. It fits well on arrival in Nafplio, or as a separate shorter excursion during an Argolis stay. Confirm the current route and opening hours before planning it as a late-afternoon stop. Exposed and irregular surfaces need suitable shoes. If you have already spent a hot morning at Mycenae, another day may give Tiryns the attention it deserves.
