Mycenae

Mycenae is a Bronze Age citadel whose gateways, massive walls and position above the Argive landscape explain its power before you enter the museum. Give the site time beyond the Lion Gate.

What makes it stand out

Follow the approach into the citadel and look for how movement is controlled by walls and changing levels. The museum helps connect the architectural remains with the people and institutions that used them. The Treasury of Atreus belongs to the wider visit and needs its own stop outside the main citadel circuit.

Mycenae and Tiryns form one joint UNESCO World Heritage property. Their association with Homeric stories is culturally important, but the archaeological remains and the later heroic tradition are different kinds of evidence. Enjoy the stories of Agamemnon without treating every traditional identification as a proven biography.

Planning your visit

Reserve most of a morning, including the museum and outer monuments you choose to visit. The ground is uneven and much of the site is exposed. In hot weather, arrive early and reduce the afternoon programme. Nafplio makes a good overnight base; Nemea is a possible onward direction, but a substantial winery programme belongs on a separate day. Check which entrances, paths and monuments are currently accessible.
