ARGOLIS

Argos

Argos is a living city with archaeological remains distributed through and above its modern streets. Its theatre, agora and Larisa hill invite a different visit from the more compact old-town experience of Nafplio.

What makes it stand out

Begin with the city centre, then give the ancient theatre and nearby remains a focused visit. The Larisa fortress is a separate uphill excursion and offers a broader view of the Argive plain. The Byzantine Museum of Argolis can add another historical period if its current opening fits your day. The appeal is seeing successive layers within a functioning regional centre rather than following one enclosed archaeological circuit.

Planning your visit

A half-day works for a selected city-and-site programme; allow more for Larisa and a museum. Decide what you want to see before navigating between entrances, since proximity on a map does not make every stop part of one easy walk. Combine Argos with a Nafplio stay. Mycenae, Midea and Dendra offer further archaeology on different days rather than a compulsory afternoon checklist.
