Leonidio

Leonidio sits inland beneath red cliffs, with the cultivated Dafnon valley opening towards the sea. It is a centre of Tsakonian culture and a climbing destination, but town walks and the surrounding coast make it rewarding for non-climbers too.

What makes it stand out

Walk the centre to see the settlement against its cliff backdrop, then visit Plaka, the separate harbour on the coast. A mountain day towards Elona Monastery and Kosmas changes the setting again. These contrasts are Leonidio’s strength: town, valley, port and mountain should each have enough time instead of becoming brief pauses on one continuous drive.

Planning your visit

Stay two or three nights for a first visit. Climbers need current sector information, appropriate experience and a programme suited to weather; an introductory session should be arranged with a qualified provider. For everyone else, choose between a mountain excursion and a Poulithra coast day. Check road and monastery access before the inland drive, and leave exposed walks out of the hottest part of a summer day.
