Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus

The theatre is the most recognisable part of Epidaurus, but the visit belongs to a much larger sanctuary devoted to Asklepios. Walk beyond the seating to understand how worship, healing and public gathering occupied the valley.

What makes it stand out

The principal monuments include the theatre, temple remains and Tholos. Their setting and relationship give the site its meaning: this was a sanctuary with multiple functions, not a theatre with incidental ruins around it. A museum visit and the official site plan help you read what survives. The ancient healing cult is a historical subject, not a claim about a present-day treatment.

The sanctuary is inland. Ancient Epidaurus, the coastal settlement, is a separate destination and can provide an additional stop only if your day has time for it.

Planning your visit

Plan a full morning from Nafplio and leave the afternoon flexible. Paths and seating involve varying surfaces and levels; check the official access information for your needs. A daytime archaeological ticket and an evening performance are separate arrangements. Check festival dates and bookings with the organiser before planning a late return. For a short Argolis trip, place Mycenae and Epidaurus on different days.
