CORINTHIA

Acrocorinth

Acrocorinth rises above the ancient city as a fortified hill with successive gateways, walls and far-reaching views. The climb makes the strategic position of Corinth visible in a way the lower archaeological site cannot.

What makes it stand out

The fortifications contain work from different periods of the hill’s long defensive life. Concentrate on the gates and the changing lines of sight as you gain height. The experience is partly architectural and partly geographical: the surrounding routes and plain become as important as the surviving structures. Visit Ancient Corinth separately to connect the fortified height with the city below.

Planning your visit

Plan for an exposed uphill walk on irregular surfaces, with sturdy shoes and water. The drive to the entrance does not make the whole fortress a step-free visit. Choose a manageable turnaround point and avoid committing to every corner of the enclosure. Spring and autumn often suit the walking better than summer afternoons, but wind and rain can change conditions in any month. Check current access before driving up.
